A Blueprint for Change: Preventing Demolition Waste through Home Relocation & Deconstruction

Project Description

Thousands of residential homes are demolished in Metro Vancouver each year while we face a national housing crisis. Construction and demolition materials also make up 25% of landfill waste. It is estimated that 20% of demolished homes are high-quality homes that can be moved and repurposed, while another 60% could be deconstructed and the materials salvaged for reuse. This report outlines a new model to triage homes slated for demolition and make them available to communities in need at a fraction of the time and cost it takes to build new. It also provides recommendations for addressing the current barriers to home relocation and deconstruction.
