Construction Plastics Initiative Benchmarking Study

Project Description

Plastics from construction sites are one of Canada’s most overlooked waste streams, despite being a far greater source of plastic waste than single-use packaging. The Construction Plastics Initiative (CPI) Benchmarking Study is the first national effort to measure plastics diversion at scale in the construction sector. By analyzing data from 253 LEED-certified projects across seven provinces, this report establishes a baseline for plastics tracking and highlights major gaps in current practices. It provides actionable recommendations for suppliers, contractors, and policymakers to increase diversion, strengthen reporting, and prepare for expanded federal plastics regulations.
