Project Description
The District of Squamish commissioned Light House to examine the region’s current demolition and deconstruction waste flows and investigate opportunities to divert waste from landfills. Based on the building permits submitted in Squamish from January to November 2020, the report identified the significant contribution of non-residential construction waste and identified wood as a critical waste material that can be salvaged and reused locally via market opportunities. The report also documented the flow of building materials in the region; reviewed ‘best practices’ for managing construction and demolition waste in other jurisdictions and investigated local market opportunities for deconstruction materials. Subsequently, the District of Squamish is introducing a new Solid Waste Bylaw that adopts report recommendations to measure waste by volume and incentivizes deconstruction by rewarding the salvaging of construction materials.
